In a tank it slowly degrades, and where rain or condensation has got in it grows sludge and bacteria that block the boiler's fine nozzle. Tank decommissioning often comes with the fuel removal — draining the oil first so the tank can be cleaned, cut down or taken away safely. Say if that is what you need when you call. Collection is the practical half of the job: someone comes to where the kerosene is, pumps it out of the tank, bowser, drums or cans, checks the container for residue and takes it away under a waste transfer note. You keep the note as proof it was handled correctly. A collection is arranged around your site in Porthmadog: we match the kit to the access, quote per litre on the volume, and book a window. The lift is a short visit — pump out, check the vessel, issue the note. ## Local Welsh kerosene collector in Porthmadog: the facts Fuel | Kerosene | Service | Collection and removal | Council area | Gwynedd | Postcode districts | LL49 | Why it degrades | Grows water sludge and bacteria over time; fouls the boiler nozzle | Typical sources | Home heating tanks, decommissioning, boiler upgrades, house sales, estates | Classification | Hazardous waste — waste transfer note issued | Regulator | Natural Resources Wales | Typical cost | Quoted per litre or per job | Attendance | Booked collection, often same day | Helpline | 01295 380724 | ## Where kerosene comes from around Porthmadog In Porthmadog the usual sources of kerosene we collect are tanks holding old paraffin or long-standing kerosene the household no longer uses. A registered carrier attends home, farm, depot, marina and commercial sites, pumps out the kerosene and issues a waste transfer note on site. **Is kerosene the same as heating oil?** Kerosene (28-second) is the common domestic heating oil for off-grid homes. Heating oil also covers gas oil (35-second) used by some older or agricultural boilers. We collect both. **Why does old kerosene stop the boiler working?** Water and sludge collecting under the fuel, plus bacterial growth, block the boiler's fine nozzle. Removing the old oil and cleaning the tank usually clears it. **Can I empty my own oil tank?** It is safer and cleaner to have it pumped out by a registered carrier, especially as the oil is hazardous waste that cannot be tipped away. You also get a transfer note. **Do you decommission the tank too?** We pump out and remove the kerosene and can advise on or arrange tank cleaning and decommissioning.
